If you are dealing with soil erosion on your property, this can cause a lot of problems. Fortunately, there are many options when it comes to taking care of this problem, three of which are listed below.
One of the easiest ways to deal with soil erosion is to plant vegetation. You need to choose plants that have deep roots so they can bind with the soil and hold it in place. This works because the deep roots prevent the water from getting past them because they have thick stems and roots. If you plant the vegetation close to each other this creates a strong barrier.
Choose cover crops for this purpose, such as clover, rye, and vetch. If you want something that looks beautiful, choose daisies, wildflowers, or poppies. All these things grow well and all they need is enough water, which they will likely get from the rain. You will have to replant these each year, but they provide you with erosion control for many months.
Another way to help with erosion control is to apply mulch to the area. You can use mulch along with the above vegetation to provide extra protection. Mulch also conserves the moisture and keeps the soil temperature at the right level, which can further help with soil erosion. Mulch can even make the area look even nicer.
Use organic mulch, such as wood fibers or straw. You can also use shredded bark or bark chips that come from timber. You can use a blower to apply the mulch if it is a large area or do it by hand. Make sure you put a few inches of mulch, such as three to four inches. Purchase mulch at a garden center or you can have it delivered to your property if you purchase a large amount.
You can improve drainage in many ways. One common way is to make a channel so that water can flower through it instead of spreading over the area. This involves installing gutters or perforated pipes in different areas. Choose areas where you see the largest and heaviest water runoff.
If the area is large hire a professional to help you. The channels must be dug deep enough and if you have a large area a lot of them may need to be installed.
There are other things you can do to help you with this problem, such as taking care of compacted soil, using terra seeding, and using silt fencing.
